Protest against Greer and Murray at Bradford Literature Fest!

When & Where: Saturday July 8th, 12:00 – 12:45: We’ll gather at Yorkshire Mesmac (28 Chapel St, Bradford BD1 5DN). 13:00 – 17:30: We’ll head out to the two locations they are speaking at: Uni of Bradford Great Hall (BD7 1DP) and the Midland Hotel (BD1 4HU).

What: Bradford Literature Festival (BLF) have invited Germaine Greer and Jenni Murray to speak, ignoring the concerns of local trans people. The organisers have been reminded of Greer and Murray’s transmisogny (a type of transphobia, particularly directed towards women and feminine people). There have been meetings and correspondence, but BLF are continuing to defend their choice, saying that “Bradford Literature Festival has always sought to be a diverse, inclusive event that champions freedom of speech and creates a neutral and welcoming environment for debate”. However, we think that the safety and dignity of trans people is not a matter for debate! Trans people are at great risk of violence, and abuse leads to the awful suicide rates among trans people. Booking transphobic speakers is irresponsible.

This issue has led to Juno Dawson, the only trans speaker booked, pulling out of the festival. We hugely respect her for making this difficult decision, and just wish it weren’t necessary. You can read her full statement here:

Please join us at this important protest to tell the public, BLF organisers, Greer, and Murray that transphobia is not acceptable; we will fight for trans rights!

If you need to join once we’ve already left Mesmac, you can go straight to the Great Hall, or to Mesmac where people will have the organiser’s number.

Please see the photos in the pinned post which give more details and a map. If you still have any questions, please just ask (you can fb message Non-Binary Action or email if you don’t want to post publicly!)

Yorkshire Mesmac will be running a sanctuary space all day, where you can take a break at any time, the event for this is here:

Bring along placards, chants, noise making stuff (drums, instruments, etc.) and any ideas for protesting/disruption. We can discuss exactly what we want to do at Mesmac (12 – 12:45) and while walking to the venues.

We’re currently looking into the accessibility of Mesmac. We’ll post as soon as it’s known. If you have any specific needs, please get in touch and we’ll do everything we can to make it accessible
