On Wednesday 17th June, dozens of grassroots groups and individuals concerned about climate change met to discuss how best to coordinate their activities in the run-up to and during the crucial Copenhagen climate conference. We had a diverse group of climate campaigners, with a wide range of issues, ideologies and types of action represented. After an evening of discussion we agreed that by coordinating our efforts we stood a far greater chance of making a big impact on our city and these crucial talks than by each of us acting alone.
At this meeting we identified 8 broad areas of activity that we considered crucial for us as a network to address. With this as a broad direction for our campaigning, we have begun to divide up the work of acting on these areas between us.
Why go to all this effort? Quite simply, we are far stronger together than apart. By agreeing broadly on what we need to do and coordinating our action, we can plan ambitious and far-ranging action that could never have been achieved by any of us individually.
Finally, the key advantage of organising this way is the autonomy it provides. No group is obliged to do anything or support anything it doesn't want to! But where groups and individuals DO want to work together, it provides the means to do so, thereby offering the best of both worlds.
The broad outcomes/activities/targets we wish to address are;
Please feel free to get involved in anything you like, this is a very open and inclusive process!
Help organise action: People and groups are organising under each headline as each sees fit. We'll let you know here if/when they're meeting, who to contact, and how to get involved when we know. There's not much sorted at the moment, but that's only to be expected; we met just last week, and people only got each other's contact details on Monday 22nd June!
So far, the following has been agreed;
Share info between groups: There have been many ideas floated around how we should share information around the network. Bill from Wingfinger Graphics () has kindly offered to finalise plans around this - any suggestions you or your group may have would be very welcome.
General contact info: If you'd like to get in touch with someone to ask any general questions about the network, please contact Chris at , 0791 203 4920.
Loads of ideas were generated at the Café. You can view them all in the window below, or view the list as a webpage here. Please use these ideas! There is real creativity and ingenuity on display in these ideas, don't let them go to waste!
