Does International Aid still Matter?

9th March 13.30 to 15.30 at Oblong, Woodhouse Community Centre, 197 Woodhouse St, Leeds LS62 NY.

Join Oxfam Leeds for their panel discussion, chaired by BBC Leeds Political Editor Len Tingle, to explore the issues of international aid. Hear a variety of perspectives on the debate with local MPs Greg Mulholland and Fabian Hamilton as well as experts from NGOs and aid work.

In the last few years, overseas development aid has been heavily contested in the media. However, the coalition government has remained committed to meeting the international target of providing 0.7% of gross national income (GNI) as official development assistance (ODA) from 2013.

Organizations like Oxfam, Christian Aid and others argue for the important role of development aid in providing a route out of poverty and are currently lobbying the government ( as part of a new Food for Everyone campaign ) to honour its pledge on aid. On the other hand, some commentators are hostile to any increase in government spending on aid in a time of austerity and some in the media question the effectiveness of aid.
