Let's change the world

WHEN: Light Night 2009 | Friday 9th October

WHERE: 5:30PM @ The Common Place, then race on Briggate

WHAT IS 'THE GREAT GLOBAL WARMING RELAY RACE'?

Exactly what it says on the tin! We're inviting members of the public (that means YOU!) to join us for a flashmob relay race as part of the city's evening arts spectacular Light Night on the 9th October 2009. The aim is to create a great spectacle in the city centre that we can use to enagage ordinary people in climate change and the Copenhagen climate talks.

How will it work? Everyone will assemble at 5:30PM at The Common Place. Then we'll split into three teams; the Copenhagen Hopers, the Carbon Polluters, and the Eco Warriors. Once in our teams, we'll walk together to Briggate, take our positions, and race! During the proceedings two commentators will articulate the teams' progress, and give key messages about climate change and Copenhagen in the process. We'll also have volunteers on hand to talk to members of the public about the race and distribute information about how people can get involved in climate activism.

The race is open to all ages, abilities, genders and levels of fitness. We aim to create a spectacle, not host a 'serious' race. It's all a bit of fun, so come on and join in!

HOW TO JOIN

Joining the race couldn't be easier - simply;

  1. Let us know you're coming: If you can, please let us know that you can make it. Email your name and mobile number (if you have one) to or ring 0113 391 7917, and we'll email back to confirm your place.
  2. Turn up on the night! Meet us at 5:30PM at The Common Place (click here for a map).

Also, why not get sponsored to run the race? The event itself will cost money to put on, and Leeds TIDAL is always in need of funds to help keep us alive! If you're able to help this way, please download this sponsorship form.

ABOUT COPENHAGEN

The race to Copenhagen has begun. In December a global treaty on climate change will be negotiated in Coenhagen, Denmark. Rich nation governments are stalling to avoid deep emissions cuts, coporations are lobbying to protect their interests, and activists across the globe are campaigning to ensure a fair, ambitious and binding deal is agreed at the summit. Who wins the race could hardly be more important - a poor deal at Copenhagen will jeapordise billions of lives, while a good deal could safeguard all of our futures.

If we're to force our government to act, we need to engage ordinary people in climate change, and that's why we're holding The Great Climate Relay Race.

For more information about Copenhagen and how to act in Leeds to influence it, visit the Leeds COP Network website.
