About SCC Leeds

Who are we?

We are people from the Leeds area who share a deep concern for the future of the planet and have come together, initially through TIDAL, to campaign actively in support of the national campaign, Stop Climate Chaos – also known as iCount.

The Planning Group consists of about a dozen people, many of whom are members of related campaigns including Oxfam, WWF, Christian Aid, WDM, Friends of the Earth, People and Planet and TIDAL, as well as members of Leeds City Council’s Climate Change Office. At present we share TIDAL’s office and web space.

We welcome new members to the Planning Group. We meet in the Civic Hall, Portland Crescent, on the second Monday of each month from 7 to 9 pm. If you would like to find out more, email .

What have we done so far?

In June 2006 we celebrated World Environment Day with a giant globe and stall in Briggate where we collected Stop Climate Chaos pledge cards and signed postcards to Tony Blair.

On 2 September we held our formal Launch meeting in the Oxford Place Centre with speakers including Lucy Pearce from Stop Climate Chaos and Greg Mulholland MP for Leeds North West.

We booked a train carriage to join 25,000 people in Trafalgar Square on 4 November to demand action on Climate Change. As a direct result, the Climate Change Bill was included in the Queen’s speech.

We conducted a survey of public opinion in Leeds about climate change. The results were presented to Leeds Councillors on 9 February - the day on which the average UK citizen will already have emitted as much CO2 as the average person in India will emit all year. See the Yorkshire Post coverage.

On 11 August 2007 we helped organise the Leeds leg of Christian Aid's Carbon March - "the longest protest march in history!" Campaigners marched from Belfast to London to take the ‘cut the carbon’ message to companies, MPs and communities, with stories from Brazil, Kenya and India.

Looking forward
